Prospect & Refuge is a 2-year evening-length project that explores the conflict and the confluence between the infinite – prospect – and the intimate – refuge. In the work at large, movement collaborators Joan Meggitt and Doug Lodge explore the body as active landscape, with a focus on the experience of the moving body as it inhabits different environments. Antaeus Dance investigates larger ideas of participation and belonging through intimate exchanges, acknowledging both the strength and the vulnerability of the individual, and balancing that against the drama of collective action. Individuality and community cannot be defined without one another; one represents a desire for an unlimited vista of possibilities while the other offers finite safety and support. The tension between these two is at the heart of the work.

The overarching idea for Prospect & Refuge is the creation of a thematic modular dance – one that can change with time and venue, one that does not always appear in the same order in which it was last presented, one which plays with place, space and perspective through both film and live dance, and one which allows everyone involved to contribute actively to the creative process. As with Antaeus Dance’s last two evening-length danceworks, this piece is emerging from a collaborative process which includes individual and collective contributions from the dancers, whose movement invention and energetic signature are an integral part of the completed dancework.
