Step into another world with Antaeus Dance’s Prospect & Refuge, a captivating evening-length performance that explores the conflict and the confluence of the infinite – prospect – and the intimate – refuge. Founding Director Joan Meggitt and performance artist/dance maker Doug Lodge present the culmination of 2-year project, featuring an integrated evening of original choreography, new music by composer Bill Sallak, and a series of evocative films by Cynthia Penter. Long-time collaborators and dance partners, Lodge and Meggitt revel in the immediacy of human contact and explore the body as active landscape, with a focus on the experience of the moving body as it inhabits different environments.
The Antaeus Dancers are transplanted into lush environments and desolate locations, where artist Cynthia Penter captures them in a series of original films. Penter reveals humanity’s shared curiosity, hidden vulnerabilities, buoyant hopes and mysterious fears. Symbolic objects from the various sites transform the Gordon Square Theatre into a metaphoric space, while also serving as reminders of familiar, tangible spaces. Through Penter’s films, as well as a live performance which leaves the proscenium behind, the dancers move beyond the traditional stage space and into a poetic realm.
Antaeus Dance investigates larger ideas of participation and belonging through intimate exchanges, acknowledging both the strength and the vulnerability of the individual, and balancing that against the drama of collective action. Individuality and community cannot be defined or understood without one another; one represents a desire for an unlimited vista of possibilities, while the other offers finite safety and support. The tension between these two is at the heart of Prospect & Refuge.
The collaborative spirit is an important part of Antaeus Dance’s work and Director Joan Meggitt is honored to work alongside the Dancers, Doug Lodge, Cynthia Penter and Bill Sallak on the Prospect & Refuge Project. Antaeus Dance is delighted to close its 9th season at Cleveland Public Theatre with yet another stunning evening-length dancework that celebrates the unique voices and collective strength of its dance artists and collaborators.
